National Concert Hall

National Concert Hall

Vilnius, 2019

The present design entirely respects all planning rules required by the project task, such as construction zone, total dimension of the new building and a maximum height of 25 m.
Two main problems were set by the urban location and the surrounding existing environment:
- Form a house as a new landmark visible from all sides, forming a new urban silhouette
- Establish a relationship towards the green zones of the terraced park in the north and a dense green forest in the south with the existing protected cemetery.
The new building is of an elongated rectangular ground-plan with longer sides positioned in the direction east-west. In that way the southern green area of the forest with the protected cemetery is clearly framed.
In relation to the park the concert hall is placed centrally and in the manner of a new acropolis dominates the space, encompasses it and sets a clear hierarchy.
The building is open towards all sides while the southern busy side and the northern park side have an equal treatment.
The configuration of the terraced slopes of Tauras Hill is maintained. The main pedestrian access is from the northern park side. Green space of the square is formed by the pedestrian access roads on the green slopes.

The appearance of the new building dominates the present surrounding. The central position towards green slopes of the city indicates the importance of the building as a cultural institution of the modern world we live in. The form of the layout is recognisable. The side concrete walls have been broken and indented and as wings they stretch a light transparent crystal façade of the northern and southern front. The recognizability is even more emphasised by the structure of poles, vertical forces by which the load-bearing capacity of the weblike structure of the main façades has been realised.
The northern and southern façades are identical. The regular structure of the load-bearing poles of the transparent façade creates a dynamic relationship towards the open green zones and the panorama of the city, conveying a message of live music, as if the hall is a conductor and the an orchestra.
The form of the building is strong and complex in its presence at the same time and the internal cubes of the main and adjacent concert hall are visible.
The openness of the internal organisation enables the flexibility of use and a possibility of different spatial variations to be formed.
The existing park terraces represent an important part of the future concert hall. This is where the entrance square has been formed, a link with the urban structure as well as the distance emphasising the future “cultural acropolis”, a glowing crystal as a symbol of the new modern Vilnius.

The functional complex of the spatial organisation of the concert hall requires the simplicity and logic of use in establishing the relationship between the public and the service facilities. This project restores a direct relationship of the main concert halls, the stage and the backstage. This enables a very practical and simple use of the main facilities. The main hall is lowered by one floor and the stage is placed at the level -1 where it is connected with the main part of the backstage. A service access with the unloading ramp is placed at the same level.
The main entrance for audience is designed on the ground floor. There is an equal entrance possibility from both the north and the south. By the entrance there is direct vertical communication for the users connecting the entrance, the large and the small hall and all other facilities for the audience and finally enables the access to the roof open for public. Next to the entrance there are also commercial premises of the cultural content as well as exposition and educational space.
The main catering facilities are placed in the east and can be used independently. The small hall is situated on the upper floor, with separate backstage spaces which are vertically connected with the basement service and delivery facilities.

The complete architectural structure is defined and spatially accentuated by the choice of the materials for individual elements of the composition.
The side indented walls are concrete, visible with accentuated strength of the load-bearing construction. Between them, there is a northern and southern translucent façade – it is glazed in the upper and lower zone while the central part contains ETFE foil, which is thermally stable and constructively accentuated by rod-shaped structure vertical to the line of the façade.
The spatial dynamics is additionally underlined by the materials and represents an important element of the building both in the interior and in the exterior and the recognizability of the concert hall.
In the interior, the floors are made of polished concrete and extremely resistant. All wall coverings are wooden. The floor of the hall is always wooden and the walls are structured in a way to achieve as good acoustics as possible. Vertically placed wooden round laths enable visual attractiveness, uniqueness and recognisability but also a perfect acoustics of the main premises. The roof is flat, without a fence, ready and open for use, high above all.

Uz ulaz su smješteni i commercial premisse of cultural content, te expo and educational space.

Prostorna dinamika, dodatno naglašena materijalima, predstavlja važan element građevine kako u interijeru, tako i u vanjskoj vizuri i prepoznatljivosti nove koncertne dvorane.
